Dunkerbeck secures the slalom world title 2011

Bjorn Dunkerbeck managed to secure the PWA slalom world title with still one event to go. Congratulations to Bjorn! Good to see someone else winning again. Not that I have anything against Antoine Albeau but after winning several world titles in a row it is good to see somebody else win again. The same happened a while back in the Formula 1 where Michael Schumacher was taking all the wins successively. That became a bit boring after a while.

In my opinion it would even be better to see someone win who has never won before instead of Bjorn, Ben van der Steen for example. That will shows to the other windsurfers that it’s still possible to win a world title between all the “old” guys. On the other hand Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Antoine Albeau show how incredible talented they are because they are so consistent in their performances over the years.

Let’s see what will happen in Sylt, Germany. That will be the last race/slalom stop of the PWA Tour 2011.

Bjorn Dunkerbeck in action

I ran in to some old footage from Bjorn Dunkerbeck in action while I was looking for news about the man.Bjorn Dunkerbeck is about to switch from North Sails to Severne Sails. It was cool to see a pro windsurfer like Dunkerbeck on my homespot Strand Horst, the Netherlands. Check out the footage over here.

Severne Sails new sponsor Bjorn Dunkerbeck!

Again, very interesting news around North Sails and pro windsurfer Bjorn Dunkerbeck. He will leave North Sails for Severne Sails! Actually, it is not a big surprise since Starboard en Severne Sails are working close together.

This switch is in my opinion a remarkable choice. Before he was windsurfing with Neilpryde and North Sails. Both these brands are the biggest in the industry and thus have a lot of resources and knowledge in-house. I don’t expect Severne Sails to be on the same level as those two brands. Maybe it is a bit prejudice… for example, there are hardly any locals windsurfing with Severne Sails at my spot.

On the other hand, it’s great for Severne Sails. Bjorn is a personal brand like no other windsurfer and that will certainly have a positive influence on the sales. I also hope he will perform very well with these sails and can show everybody there are more sail brands than the few dominating the market.

Dunkerbeck switched from T1 Boards to Starboard earlier this year. We will see how he will perform with his new windsurfing equipment the upcoming season.

Starboard new sponsor Bjorn Dunkerbeck

Finally, it’s clear. Starboard will be the new board sponsor for Bjorn Dunkerbeck. There were a lot of rumours about him switching to another board brand. Also here on madwindsurfing.com.

Lately, Bjorn Dunkerbeck was not performing so well. In Turkey he showed he has still a lot of skills, but not on his regular boards. He was windsurfing on the Isonic series from Starboard to everybody`s suprise. In Sylt Bjorn showed that he and starboard is a very good combination. He managed to win the Event.

Björn Dunkerbeck to Starboard?

Björn Dunkerbeck was really a though guy to beat last PWA World Cup in Turkey. At last some resistance for the dominating Antoine Albeau! The most outstanding fact is the fact that Dunkerbeck wasn’t using his Thommen Boards which is his current sponsor! Even worse, he was using boards from his main competitor Starboard!

On Windsurfing.nl were a lot of people speculating why he was not windsurfing on his own Thommen boards. It seems clear to me. He is looking for new and faster windsurfing equipment to be competitive again. His achievements are not as good as a few years ago. And the word is going around that Bjorn Dunkerbeck will also loose North Sails has his Sail sponsor. So he is shopping around!

According to this post (in dutch) Björn Dunkerbeck appeared in Turkey with a full quiver of Starboards AND F2 boards. His preference seems obvious. Dunkerbeck was the whole event on Starboard. Lets see which brand he will use during the PWA event in Sylt.
